像历史上所有深入人心的乐团一样，威豹的命运始终多舛。1977年贝斯手Rick Savage、吉他手Pete Willis和Steve Clark、主唱Joe Elliot、鼓手Tony Kenning组成威豹（Def Leppard是从deaf leopard发想而来）。但直到80年鼓手Rick Allen的加入，乐队班底才算底定，首张专辑“On Through The Night” 就此问世，制作人是“圣徒犹大”（JUDAS PRIEST）的汤姆·阿洛姆（Tom Allom），他准确地抓住了乐队的青春气息。这张专辑在英美都进入了各自的排行榜，初步奠定了DEF LEPPARD在重金属界的地位。
